The New Garden

We have wanted to do this for so many years, and finally, at the end of 2008, we finally did: we removed 5000 sq. ft. of lawn in our front yard and replaced it with, you guessed it, a heart-shaped garden.

My husband and I and our family live in the suburbs of Los Angeles and love it---especially the opportunity to enjoy our outdoor spaces year-round. This project grew out of (1) our love for cooking and (2) a heightened need for all of us to find more ways to live sustainably.

In our garden, we planted beets, cabbage (both red and green), brussels sprouts (my favorite veg!), broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, radishes, bok choy, carrots, fava beans, swiss chard, onions, garlic, herbs, and winter lettuces. We have committed ourselves to not using chemicals in our garden.

We have been having lovely green salads every night almost since the first day that we planted the lettuces----it is possible to harvest the outer, mature leaves, leaving the plants in tact to continue to grow.

I will post photos and video to accompany this blog, which will detail the progress of our garden as well as our family.
